Starting a company is hard and often requires unusual amounts of capital and unusual access to knowledge, such as connections with property brokers, or other due diligence advantages, like having an inside connection with a franchise, or a family member who paved the way.

Agreed! A mixed economy with UBI is a happy medium; it has capitalism's innovation and economic freedom with socialism's justice and equity. Moreover, UBI reduces worker exploitation and eliminates the stigma of state assistance. You are correct that Marx didn't see this coming – how could he? But, his critique of capitalism likely influenced the development of what we have today and, hopefully, the UBI we have tomorrow.
